Our brain has simply learned that food create a rapid, reliable, and effective sense of relief = i.e. escapes the pain of negative emotions.
And because many of us have a hard time allowing and processing our own negative emotions, we also feel responsible and have a hard time allowing other people to have negative emotions, too.
