[00:00:02] Ready to lose 40 plus pounds without giving up happy hours, weekend brunches, or date nights. Then it's time to uncover the hidden link between binge eating and toxic relationships. And finally break free from both. Welcome to the Hungry for Love podcast with Jillian Scott. Y' all ready? Let's go.
[00:00:24] Hey. Hey. Welcome back.
[00:00:26] All right, so this is going to be one of the first episodes that I do on this concept around microdosing GLP1s and the benefits of it, because there are a lot of physical benefits, but there's also benefits around regulating and helping you to regulate your nervous system that I don't think are being talked about as much. And for those of us who are trauma survivors and we have experienced complex trauma and most likely complex ptsd, this is huge. Creating the ability for our brains and our bodies to finally feel safe. That's incredible because for some people, mindset tools, somatic work, the nervous system regulation, deep breathing and light movement, some of that can be really effective.
[00:01:12] But some of us really struggle with survival mode. We struggle with anxiety and to really create a sense of safety and calm in our bodies due to any number of stimuli, but especially coming out of abusive marriages and abusive childhoods. And this is not to cast blame on other people. I want to bring it back to you, but we have to look at that as a fact. That is a fact of what we have been through. And we now want to better understand how it's impacting our body. So how it impacts our brain, how it impacts our psychology, and now how it's impacted our nervous system and how because of that impact on our nervous system, it's impacted the physiology of our body. It impacts how our body functions and operates.
[00:01:54] And this is less of a do as I say because I'm an expert in this. And more coming from a place of, here's what I'm learning, here's what I'm understanding, here's how I'm putting some of these pieces together.
[00:02:08] Because microdosing GLP1s for nervous system regulation is not really being talked about. I don't know a lot of people who are looking at it from that lens and from that angle, they're looking at GLPs as a quick fix. As a. Sometimes it's like demonized. It's weaponized. There seems to be a really big stigma around peptides, which I'm sure I will soon find out and learn more or maybe hear more. But to me, I see this as a tool. Peptides operate similar to hormones in the body. They act as Messengers.
[00:02:42] And so to me, I'm like, if this is going to help, right? It's if you have an underactive thyroid and you need additional thyroid support, it's like taking different supplements, different medications. It's all there to help, to support your body. Or if you have a hormone imbalance with one of the sex hormones of estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, if one of those are out of balance. Yes, we need lifestyle changes, but we may also need medical intervention and we may need hormones that we add to our body to help our body function better.
[00:03:15] That's what this is all about. And so the more that I've really explored how trauma manifests in the body physically and the physical harm that it does to our body and its natural processes, the more that I recognize the need to address metabolic health and some of these other health conditions.
[00:03:35] So yes, let's break the diet rules, let's stop restricting so we can stop binging. Let's address our emotional eating and binge eating habit. Let's heal the trauma. Let's learn how to reset our nervous system and learn tools for breath, work and movement. Let's also improve our self concept, let's think better of ourselves and learn how to address the aftermath of abusive relationships like shame and self doubt and abandonment wounds. There are definitely these pieces and another piece that I'm now weaving in and bringing in is how do we restore metabolic health? And that's this question that I've been asking and that I've been thinking about because in my practice what I found is that some people can get really great results and they'll lose 20, 30, 40 plus pounds in six months.
[00:04:20] But I also have some clients who will lose more like five to ten pounds in six months. They seem to be following a lot of the protocol, but they're still not creating the results that they want.
[00:04:31] And so as I explore this and look at, okay, how do we help our bodies to function better? I've really done this deep dive into better understanding autoimmune diseases, GLPs, hormones, how all of these all play together, trauma and abuse, and really bringing in the physiology with the psychology.
[00:04:51] And this is where a lot of practitioners stay in their own bucket of expertise, right? If you have a psychologist or a psychiatrist, it's like they have their zone of genius. That's all that they look at. It's like that's their zone. They really don't touch the physical sides of the body. And then you have these physical practitioners, you might have a general care practitioner or maybe an endocrinologist who focuses more on hormones. But they aren't going to overlap typically with the mental, emotional side of things. They typically don't overlap with therapists and counselors and people doing this work.
[00:05:25] Even though it's all connected, that's where I get really curious. And I've been exploring this more. The more that I research and I study, the more that I see, the more I'm like, oh, my gosh, this is going to be so helpful. And so I'm going to share more of GLPs, how to use them better, why I think people have really struggled with side effects coming off of them, weight regain.
[00:05:50] But I also am going to share my personal experience of starting this because I have some health conditions that are underlying. And looking at me on the surface, I look pretty good. I'm fit, I have some good muscle mass. I'm not too thin. I'm not overweight. But I also have some very real concerns when it comes to my health and things that the standard doctor has not been able to help me address and things that, as I'm putting all of these pieces together, it is likely that I have insulin resistance, an underactive thyroid, or an autoimmune disease.
[00:06:25] Because of the trauma that I've faced and because of this prolonged, extended amount of trauma, I can't see how it's possible that I wouldn't have it. There's no way that I could possibly not have some kind of condition based on everything that I've lived through. And I have some symptoms that are pretty unique, but also that have me thinking along those lines. This is the other piece about GLP1s is it's not just the weight loss component or even the insulin component. And managing insulin resistance. I think that is fantastic, especially for trauma survivors, whether you've been diagnosed with it or not.
[00:07:01] But I also think that there are other healing properties. Not that this is going to cure an autoimmune disease or it's going to heal your thyroid. This is part of a healing strategy, and I want to be really clear on that. Also, this is not medical advice. I am not your doctor. I am not prescribing medication. I am not diagnosing you. I like, I want to be very clear.
[00:07:24] This is a place for me to share these ideas and to help bring more awareness so that we can better understand what's really at play. Part of this is I want to help people to be healthier physically, mentally, emotionally. And part of physical health is weight loss.
[00:07:41] But that's not all there are other aspects of physical health that I want to help you achieve and make sure that your body is truly functioning at optimal levels. This came up last week because my son had a preschool teacher who went into the hospital for an illness and she died. She never came back and she was obese. And I believe it was really health complications due to the obesity and additional health issues that she faced.
[00:08:09] And her life was cut extremely short. I don't know exactly how old she was, but I believe she was in her 40s.
[00:08:17] She was fairly young and she was a really sweet woman. I didn't get to know her super well, but always very friendly, loved the kids and it's heartbreaking, but this is real. Regardless of the weight. There are physical conditions that when left untreated, not just can shorten our lifespan, but but they really create a miserable existence for us here, physically, emotionally.
[00:08:42] So as I start to explore this, I'm looking at how in particular, like this has been, one of the aspects I really hit harder has been how chronic relational or emotional stress or how these forms of abuse can biologically shift your nervous system into long term survival mode. What it seems like is happening is that because you are in this heightened state of safety and survival, it alters hormone signaling, increases inflammation and insulin resistance, it disrupts gut and immune regulation. There's an infinite increase in autoimmune diseases, not just because of lifestyle factors. I do think that will play a role, and that does play a role. But I think also it has been this systemic stress, this chronic stress and anxiety that we have been in and these heightened states of fight or flight and how our nervous system has just been so eroded over the years. I want to look at this not just from a place of weight loss and looking good in a bathing suit, but really in a place of restoring your health. And when we really think about metabolic health, internal health, there are so many different systems that we want to just get functioning better and playing better together.
[00:10:00] So let's look at chronic stress and then we'll look at some of the measurable shifts that happen as a whole. Chronic stress is consistently high levels of cortisol that increases inflammation and it's due to chronic activation of the nervous system. So a chronic state of fight or flight or freeze and appease, and often it's all of them, right? It's some combination thereof.
[00:10:24] What we see is that when we are in these states of abusive relationships and we've been there for decades, it leads to very measurable shifts. So number one, a hormonal cascade Constant cortisol production can lead to insulin resistance. Over time, even if somebody eats healthy, their body can remain in a pro inflammatory and fat storing state because the brain signals that the environment is not safe. It's not safe out there. So we have to store everything that we get.
[00:10:55] High cortisol seems to lead to high insulin resistance. There is a direct connection, and I believe that's because of the vagus nerve that goes between your brain and your gut. So since a huge portion of your immune system resides in your gut, chronic stress often leads to increased intestinal permeability, that is leaky gut.
[00:11:16] So this triggers systemic inflammation, which is a hallmark of metabolic dysfunction.
[00:11:23] Now, because of your immune system being in the gut and this chronic activation, I think this is also what's activating the autoimmune diseases.
[00:11:32] So these are all now starting to play together, right? And this is where we need everything to be functioning properly and playing together. But as you can see, the chronic stress and the abuse and that fight or flight state that we are so prone to, it's really had profound internal effects on our health, on how our body functions.
[00:11:51] Not just from a state of being able to burn fat and metabolize better, but from a place of really truly keeping you safe. And a lot of this has to do with that vagus nerve. So part of your nervous system, right, because your nervous system is very responsible for your immune system.
[00:12:08] So if your nervous system now is going haywire and it's being degraded and overstimulated constantly, it's going to create an immune response. There's no other way around it. There has to be an impact on your immune system. And I believe this is why autoimmune diseases are so common in trauma survivors, even though that's not what we seem to be hearing, because it's bringing the psychology in with physiology and mixing that together. And I did actually learn that there is a term for that, a type of doctor who addresses both psychoneuroimmunology, which is people who study the interaction between the mind, brain and immune system. So now we're starting to get somewhere, right? Like now we're starting to address the physiology with the psychology.
[00:12:57] There's a lot there that I don't think has really been fully explored.
[00:13:02] And there's probably a whole host of reasons. And I think in large part because we have only in, I would say the last maybe 10 to 15 years, really become more aware of what emotional, verbal, spiritual abuse actually looks like.
[00:13:16] So this is really important that we recognize because systemic inflammation, insulin resistance, These are hallmarks of metabolic dysfunction. So when our metabolism is not functioning properly, it's not that you are broken as a person, it's that your body's systems have been compromised and it's been compromised because of survival.
[00:13:40] And then if we look at a cellular level, this constant high alert drains energy production.
[00:13:46] So this often manifests as tired but wired, or I call it tired but can't sleep or burnout. This also impacts the adrenal glands and your body's natural ability to regulate stress and creates a sense of safety where it can feel stress, but then it also finds ways to repair, heal, get back to safety versus it feels stress, but it just stays in that heightened stress state constantly.
[00:14:12] As I've been exploring and researching, peptides seem to be a really powerful tool for internal healing. Peptides are a fascinating piece of this puzzle because they act as signaling molecules. So similar to hormones, they are messengers. They are essentially reminding the body how to perform specific functions. Hallelujah, thank you Jesus. That's exactly what we want. We need to teach our body and we need extra things for our body so that it can relearn and how to perform basic functions. For some people with highly disregulated systems, you're probably going to have a couple of different aspects here. Number one, I think GLP1 agonists are hitting all the marks. So these can help stabilize the gut brain connection and manage insulin signaling, which again disrupted by years and years, if not decades of cortisol spikes. Recent studies also show how GLP1s reduce inflammation, decrease overthinking and signs of anxiety, as well as heal the gut and can help reset your immune system that has been completely taxed, completely shocked by chronic inflammation and stress. And I've also heard so many people share that they feel calmer, they feel better, they feel more grounded. It's not just about the food noise, because I think that has come up too. And that's where we hear a lot of this is, oh, it decreases the desire for food or this constant thinking and obsession with food.
[00:15:32] But I think it's also helping to address the constant overthinking, worry, worst case scenario, thinking, indulging in negative loops. When you start a microdosing protocol, it can have really profound impacts on your mental health. But there's more than just GLPs when it comes to peptides. So there are gut healing peptides. Compounds like BPC157, thymosine alpha 1 and KpV are often discussed for their systemic anti inflammatory effects and ability to help Repair the GI tract lining, which is often a first casualty of chronic stress, because one of those receptors of the vagus nerve is in your gut as it's being constricted and constantly triggered and activated. And as you are stuck in these functional freezes and survival mode, your body is learning how to shut down all the superfluous activity. And we need to get it to lighten up. We need to get it to feel safe.
[00:16:28] And again, deep breathing and light movement, visualization and meditation, those can be really powerful practices. But that may not be enough to help your body function the way that it's supposed to.
[00:16:41] Sometimes we need more medical intervention, and I hope that as a whole, we can drop the stigma, we can drop the shame, we can drop the demonizing of it and see it as a way that we can heal. Because, y', all, we have been shamed long enough.
[00:16:56] We need to learn how to recognize when there are tools and things that are available to us. And the other thing that I'll say here real quick is, just because I think there are incredible healing benefits doesn't mean that you have to use this. This is an option. This is something that I think we would all benefit from. But at the end of the day, you get to decide what's best for you and for your health. What I want to do is help share more information and hopefully spark the conversation and get more people thinking about it and collaborating on this. I was just talking with a friend and sharing how I think it would be so fun to bring in some different medical professionals and maybe like a couple naturopaths and people who specialize in maybe pain management, autoimmune diseases, thyroid functions, and like, different specialties. And then bring in one or two psychologists and actually talk about how do these things actually play together and have a panel discussion. This is where I'm going to nerd out and be like, that would be so fun because there are these connections that are happening that many people are overlooking. And when it comes to healing, we may need to try a variety of tools, a variety of modalities.
[00:18:04] For some people, utilizing the peptides are going to help the body to feel safe enough to rest, to repair, and to get the body functioning properly the way that it's supposed to. But we really need a holistic approach to healing. So this is why it's not just about let these be your one sole provider. I think this is really the problem as to why, why people's over dependence and over reliance on GLP1s for weight loss. It's why they are on too high of doses, they have really unbearable side effects and then they don't know how to come off, they're not coming off properly and then they gain the weight back and it's because they don't change any of these other external factors. But we really need to look at nervous system regulation, anti inflammatory nutrition, getting our body and our circadian rhythm back in order to so that we can sleep better. Getting in adequate amounts of sunlight, not just for vitamin D, but just the healing benefits of sunlight, more weightlifting and potentially less cardio.
[00:19:04] So walking is great, but if you are doing high intensity workouts or you're a marathon runner or cyclist or something like that, that can be increasing your stress response, increasing the cortisol and increasing the inflammation in your body.
[00:19:18] And we wanna make sure that especially for women, that you have adequate muscle mass on your body. So there are going to be pieces here that we wanna start to incorporate and implement. And again, step by step, one percent at a time.
[00:19:32] And this can feel like a lot. And this is also where I feel like GLPs can help in terms of regulating your nervous system, helping to regulate and calm your mind so that as you start to take on a protocol like this, you don't feel so overwhelmed hearing all of these things. When you are in sur mode, everything's gonna feel very overwhelming. The foundation of your nervous system regulation is to create a sense of safety. But if you are constantly feeling dysregulated and you can't ever seem to create that sense of calm or groundedness, especially when you've left the dynamic, this is where GLP1 agonists can be extremely effective.
[00:20:11] And this is so that these lifestyle aspects and these somatic works and the mindset work so that these other pieces can work better.
[00:20:19] That's the whole point of this.
[00:20:20] I love me a good analogy. I am great at coming up with some. I've got some really great analogies and for me having a visual representation helps things to make sense. I like things visually. I want you to think about the body budget. So think of your metabolism like a household budget. When you've lived through years of high stress or dysfunctional relationships and abuse, your nervous system stays in emergency mode.
[00:20:46] It's like your body is bracing for a financial crash that never ends. So it stops spending, it stops spending energy on things like repair digestion, fat, burning your immune system and instead it hoards every bit of fuel as emergency savings. This is where we see things like inflammation and stubborn belly fat.
[00:21:12] This is your emergency fund. Because it's like, oh no, we don't have enough. There's a crash coming, there's a financial apocalypse and we need to store away as much as we possibly can.
[00:21:22] So we aren't just looking at what you eat, we're looking at how to tell your body it's finally safe enough to spend its energy again.
[00:21:31] That metabolic stall or high inflammation that you're feeling is your body's way of building a protective shield against a world that felt unsafe for a long time. My goal is to help you gently melt the shield with the use of physical supports like peptides to repair the internal damage, combined with mindset and somatic work to show your brain, your body, your nervous system that the threat is gone. We want a multi pronged approach to address this from multiple angles. So when your inflammation drops and your nervous system regulates, your body will naturally feel at peace and ease to release the weight that it was holding as that shield, as that protective layer. We want to move from the state of surviving the past to thriving in the present. But we have to create that sense of safety and it's safety emotionally, mentally, to lose the weight. There also has to be physical safety in your body.
[00:22:28] And for those of us who have experienced so much trauma and abuse, that may be really hard to do on your own. Some people can. I do believe that some people can do it without the use of peptides. But as I'm going to share in future episodes, peptides are not just about weight loss. And I do believe that I will experience mental, emotion and nervous system improvements by being on one.
[00:22:52] So in following episodes I'm going to talk about more of the benefits, specifically about GLP1s weight loss and non weight loss related aspects. Because there has been so much to come out within the modern medical community over the last like year or two.
[00:23:09] And I'm going to share a little bit more of my story, my health conditions and why. I'm going to start incorporating this as part of my own healing journey. And I'll also be documenting and sharing more of like week to week, what I'm experiencing, at least for the first time, several weeks. Because people are noticing a huge difference and their mindset in their emotional capacity and how much capacity they have to regulate emotions with when it comes to inflammation as well as body weight. And so this is something where the more that I think we can have an open mind about this, the more that we can get curious, the more that we can better explore and see what's for us and what's not.
[00:23:55] And there are going to be, I think there are always going to be options. And you get to choose how you want to get somewhere, right? It's if you're going from New York to California, you have options of how you want to get there. You can walk, you can ride a bike, you could drive, you could take a train, you could take a bus, you could take a plane, you could take a private jet versus a commercial flight, right? It's like you have probably a dozen different ways that you can get from New York to California. And you get to decide how do you want to get there, how fast do you want to get there, right? Because there's going to be a big time difference if I'm trying to walk to California versus hopping on a flight and flying there.
[00:24:37] So. And I like, this is more just to help you create empowered decisions. This is to help you really reclaim your health, reclaim your body, reclaim your nervous system.
[00:24:49] And I'm gonna share all the tools that I think are gonna be relevant and helpful.
[00:24:54] So in coming episodes, I'm gonna be talking more about your thyroid, I'm gonna talk more about adrenal fatigue and challenges. With that, I'll be talking more about autoimmune disease and how do we, like, address this.
[00:25:07] And really, I think a lot of it, especially with GLP1s and microdosing those, it's on symptom management and helping the body to function better. Again, not that it's going to cure anything, but I think you can really get symptoms under control at very low doses and in a way that works for your body. That's the biggest thing, is that microdosing GLPS has helped people to feel better while on it. Just like the proper dose of hormones is going to help somebody to feel better, that's what we want with any peptide. The right dose of a peptide is going to help you feel and function better, not worse. And so if you are feeling worse, there are things that we want to look at. And a lot of that is just, it's a dosing strategy, it's a titration strategy up and down. It's looking at cycling on or off or through different peptides. And so this is. It's a whole world that I'm now getting to explore. And I want to invite you on this journey with me. Whether you are interested in the peptides or you are more curious about the coaching, or maybe you want both. Maybe this is something where you're like, oh my gosh, this sounds like exactly what I need. Then I would love to chat more. You can schedule a free
