You know the moment...

You weren't hungry. You weren't even thinking about food.

And then suddenly… you NEEDED something sweet.

Or salty. Or crunchy. Or whatever your particular “screw it, I need this RIGHT NOW” food happens to be.

And that urge to eat feels almost impossible to ignore.

But here's what I want you to know:

There's a process for learning how to navigate the urge itself, and it's one of the first steps I teach clients who want to end emotional eating.

In this episode, I'm breaking down what is actually happening when an emotional-eating urge hits, why trying to simply resist it often doesn't work, and what becomes possible when you learn how to handle the urge differently.

The goal isn't to become someone who never wants cookies again.

The goal is to become someone who can feel an urge without automatically handing it the steering wheel.

[00:00:02] Speaker A: Ready to lose 40 plus pounds without giving up happy hours, weekend brunches, or date nights. Then it's time to uncover the hidden link between binge eating and toxic relationships. And finally break free from both. Welcome to the Hungry for Love podcast with Jillian Scott. Y' all ready? Let's go. [00:00:24] Speaker B: Hey. Hey. Welcome back. So we're going to talk about that moment that we have all been through. Whether it strikes around 3pm, 4pm in the afternoon, or maybe it hits a little bit later, like 8 o', clock, 9 o', clock, where you're not hungry, you know that you're not hungry, but you're feeling a little snacky. Maybe it's something sweet, maybe it's something salty, maybe you want a little bit of both. And you start rationalizing. You start thinking about, okay, what kind of food's in the vending machine, what kind of food is in this office break room, or what kind of food is in the pantry? Do we still have ice cream? Do I still have that bar that I hid under the bag of peas? We start thinking about what are all the things that we have? And then we start opening cabinets and pantry doors. And you might even start to look in cabinets where you're like, you know, there's not something in there, but you're hoping maybe something will magically appear. But we start with just a little bit here, a little bit there, and before you know it, it's either a full on emotional eating session, just trying to relax, trying to decompress, maybe becomes more of a binge. But you wake up the next day feeling frustrated and wondering like, ugh, why did I do that again? And you had the best of intentions just to keep it to a small snack, just to try to portion it out, kind of keep it controlled, but it just didn't seem to happen. And part of it is because we have thoughts that get in the way, but we also have thoughts that justify thoughts that give us permission. And that is what so many of us are wrestling with. It's not just that physical desire for food, being able to taste it in your mouth. And it's like it's not just the craving and the sensation that you experience. It's all of those permission giving thoughts. You worked really hard today. You did such a good job navigating that difficult person. Oh my gosh. You deserve this, girl. It has been a long week. Pour yourself a glass of wine. You deserve this. It's okay. A little bit won't hurt. Just one more. It's all right. We can start over. Tomorrow, we don't really know how to handle this. And so part of it is that we have never really been taught to handle the urge itself. All we have been taught is that we just need to say no. We have been taught to try to employ willpower. And I found even when I did a program where it was like, oh, you don't need willpower, please. I definitely needed willpower because I was trying to change too much too fast, too soon, which is also my definition of trauma, by the way. Too much too fast, too soon. A lot of times that becomes the problem. And so what we need to do is actually figure out and better understand how to handle that desire for food. And this is one piece of what I teach with emotional eating. So my emotional eating process has five steps. There are five parts. One of the parts is how to handle an urge, how to handle the craving. And there are a variety of different tools and steps and things that I walk people through. Because this is not just a think happy thoughts and it'll go away. This is not just a magically change, a habit that has been happening for years, maybe even decades. We don't change this on a dime, but it is a process. And part of it is having a step by step process for what do we want to do instead of eating? Because a lot of times instead of eating, we tell ourselves, either I just need to sit here and be bored and like, this sucks, I can't do anything, or it's, I'm just gonna go clean the toilet, or I'm gonna go organize my closet. And your brain in those moments doesn't want to do that. It wants to relax. It wants to decompress. And so we need to learn how to meet our emotional needs without looking for food to do that for us. This is why it's part of my process for emotional eating. But one of the things that I recognized is that this can create so much momentum for you as you think about navigating this, especially as we go into the holidays, a craving or an urge, this is not about true physical hunger. This is really about just a desire for food. And typically it's that we want something that tastes good. And a lot of times these will come on and be urgent. And so that is one of the defining characteristics of cravings or of urges specifically. I think urges think urgent. I want it now. I want it intensely. All we know how to do is try to white knuckle in willpower to say no. And when we are at the end of the day and we just don't have it in us anymore when we're at the end of the day and there is no willpower left. In part because willpower is stored in your prefrontal cortex and the part right behind your forehead. Even though you may not have felt like you needed willpower all day, if you were thinking, problem solving, navigating a difficult emotional season, anytime that we are using that thinking part of our brain, it starts to deplete our willpower because that's the same section where that's housed. And so it's no wonder by the end of the day, it doesn't feel like we have anything left. This is why we can't rely on willpower. We need to have a process, and part of that is going to be understanding, what is the food doing for you? We have to start to get into that a little bit. But then you also need to know, so what do I actually do with this desire? If I'm not supposed to need willpower, how do I actually handle this? And that is what I am going to teach you. Because just trying to fight and resist it is like taking that beach ball and stuffing it under the water of a pool. You're stuffing it under the surface and you can hold it down, but you can only hold it for so long. Eventually the willpower, it runs out and so that ball pops right back up. And this is what keeps us in this cycle of restricting and then binging. It's like restricting, needing willpower, saying, no, just eat clean, just eat healthy. And then that ball pops up and we binge. And sometimes it's not a full on binge, but sometimes we're giving in to that craving or that desire for food. And that just has us feeling really defeated because we don't feel in control. And that can feel very scary because it's like I either have to give up my favorite foods or my favorite holidays, my favorite events, my favorite traditions. Especially as we come to the end of the year, it's gonna suck, I'm gonna miss out. It's like you're kind of dealing with that. It's like grief and loss over what you think you would have to miss out on and give up in order to be able to say no. Or it becomes a giant free for all. And it's like, fuck it, it's the holidays. We just eat our faces off. And we fall into this cycle year after year. And sometimes it's week after week, month after month. But this is where we have to learn to break the cycle. I have created A five step process that I'm going to teach you inside a brand new offer called when the Urge Hits, where I'm walking you through these five steps and I'm going to teach you how to learn from the cravings, how to learn from the urges. Even when you eat. We have to get better at evaluating. There is a bonus part six where I'm going to teach you how to properly evaluate. That way you can better understand what is it that I'm looking for food to do for me that I haven't learned to do another way. That is the big question that we are going to be answering. And as we head into basically the emotional Eating Olympics here of going through Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, all of that, it is literally emotional eating season. There's a lot happening. And so what I decided to do was to create this mini offer. When the urge hits, we are going to work together privately for six weeks specifically on this. How do you handle that craving, that urge, that desire which starts to get us into peeling back and unraveling the emotional eating cycle and how that's playing out for you, what's really going on? I want to teach you how to handle and navigate your urges and your cravings. That way over the next six weeks you're learning how to do this and feel more calm and at ease with food. And then you can finish out the year either with additional support if you want to continue working with me, or you now feel better about not giving into your cravings throughout the holidays. And this is what's important, is that you create a healthy relationship with food where you're not afraid of it, where it does not control you. You're not at the mercy of your cravings and food urges. You no longer have to be afraid of the cookie swaps or the bake sales or the holiday parties. There can be peace and ease. Food becomes neutral and to the point where you can literally forget that you have it. That is what we're working to create. So here's how the pricing is structured. If you sign up on Thursday, the day that this releases, it's 297 for the six weeks of private coaching. On Friday, the rate goes up by $100. So it's now 397. This continues on Saturday and Sunday, so 497 and then 597 respectively through the weekend. And I've actually decided to open up 10 spots here. Once these 10 spots are full, then the link will be replaced by a waitlist link. This is your best opportunity to get in and start working on this now. Over the weekend you will get access to some course content that will give you a guideline and a structure for how this is going to work. Nothing is required before the first session. This is more just here for you to do at your own pace. This is a special rate and I'm selling this only through the weekend. So you have until October 5th because starting October 5th that week we are going to start calls if this is something that you would like help with. If you want one of those spots, click on the link in the show notes, sign up and let's go. And I'm going to set you up for the best holiday season ever where you're going to learn how to have your cake and eat it too without binging on it. Okay? If you have been wrestling and struggling with how do you say no to those cravings and those urges? We are going to handle the holidays like a boss and I'm going to teach you how to do it without giving up any of your favorite things. How to do it without feeling like you're missing out. This is the best part of it all. All right, this episode is going to be short and sweet because I thought of this offer today and I was like, you know what, I am just going to launch it and get it out into the world. So that's what I'm doing. And sometimes we need to let inspiration strike and we need to move on it. And sometimes it's like this gut knowing kind of that moment when you know it's time to leave that toxic relationship. It's like you can't help but do it. You have to act. You can't keep it inside of you any longer. That's what happened for me with this. So come join me. Let's go. I got you questions, comments, fears, regrets. Send me a message. Happy to chat and answer them. But don't delay too long because I promise these spots are gonna go horrible quick. All right, y', all, here's to creating the life and body and relationship with food that you crave.
